Abruzzo by Bike

Abruzzo Region can be read as synonymous of National Parks and Reserves.
Abruzzo is also a wonderful destinations for those visitors interested in its Medieval and Renaissance villages perched on the hills. For those who love the two wheels do not worry, between mountains, hills, flat lands and coast, there is plenty of choice for everyone to ride.

First of all, we recommend the Bike to Coast, a 131 km cycle path that winds mostly on an old railway track, overlooking the sea, from Martinsicuro to San Salvo.
In the 2020 the Bike To Coast bikepath has won the Italian Green Road Award.

It run throught nineteen municipalities with incredible views of the Adriatic and from some points of the route it’s easy to reach and discover the hinterland in several places.

The new project “Heart of Abruzzo” includes fourteen new bike itineraries for over a thousand kilometers and a total duration of 70 hours.
The entire area involves twenty-seven municipalities, two National Parks, one Regional Park, and a few oasis and reserves.

Would you like a taste of it?
The tour of the Peligni rivers and vineyards, or the Subequana Valley, or the one of Terre dei Peligni, or from Sulmona to Roccapia, or again the tour of the major highlands.

Here everyone can enjoy himself, finding the perfect itinerary ranging from intermediate to expert and for evey palate , those who ride road bike or mountain bike, the untracyclist or the expert.

If you like adventure you can dare in winter, for example, with an excursion on snow with a fat bike, or with an e-mtb among the beech woods, along the paths within the Majella National Park.
Rocca di Mezzo and Ovindoli are the two municipality who presenve the area called Piani di Pezza on the Altopiano delle Rocche, a glacial plateau , set in the Sirente – Velino Regional Natural Park.

Winter or summer in Campo Imperatore means a full immersion in nature, between the Sirente – Velino Regional Park and the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.
It starts with the ascent of the Gran Sasso d’Italia by cable car and then using the e-bikes up to Campo Imperatore at 2,100 meters. From here you can admire the fantastic panorama under the Gran Sasso massif, the highest peak of the Apennines at 2,912 meters high.

Back to the Bike to Coast do not miss the spectacular Costa dei Trabocchi, which takes its name from the traditional fishing jetties, with its sandy coves, a wonder next to the old railway track .
Here you cycle among cultural treasures and splendid nature, accompanied by the sound of the sea , you can visit the Aragonese Castle, the Torre del Moro, the Acquabella nature reserve.

The tour of the Theatine hills is suitable for everyone, a circular route that goes inland, cycling through vineyards and olive groves, between small villages and castles, where you can also savor the area from a food and wine point of view.

For those who love mountain biking, try the path that leads to the castle of Crecchio and which develops within the Strada del Vino Teatino , cycling along vineyards and historic cellars, encountering castles and villages, alternating vineyards and olive trees.

Remember you are in one of the greener region of Europe, with three National Parks, one Regional Park and an endless number of oases, regional and state reserves, even with a protected marine area.
Venture also in autumn, will be lovely to ride and enjoy the view of the woods from multiple colors.

Val Cervara offers you a challenging tour, but after all, pedaling with a view of a spectacular beech forest is no small feat. Here are the oldest beech trees in Europe, up to 560 years old.
Another challenging ride is the ring that you can start in Bosco di Sant’Antonio, between Cansano and Pescocostanzo, on asphalt, on freshly polished roads for the passage of the last edition of the Giro d’Italia.

In addition to the art cities such as Chieti, L’Aquila, Pescara and Teramo and to the culinary delicacies (cicerchiata, arrosticini, mazzarelle …) there are some magical places to absolutely visit.

For example Rocca Calascio which is a medieval fortification immersed in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park at 1,464 meters altitude; or the Stiffe Caves, geologically formed about 600,000 years ago in the municipality of San Demetrio ne ‘Vestini; and again the hermitage of San Bartolomeo in Legio, in the municipality of Roccamorice, excavated inside a rocky spur 700 meters above sea level.
